Building a location-independent service before it became urgent

Corporate Options was a local cloud service provider. Before Covid, I moved its technology away from premises-dependent systems and onto services designed to remain available wherever the team needed to work.

Anticipate the operating need

Location dependence was already an avoidable business risk. Waiting for a disruption to prove the point would have meant changing critical systems under pressure, so I moved the company towards robust cloud-based services while there was still time to design and transition them properly.

The aim was not cloud adoption for its own sake. It was to give the business a dependable working environment that was no longer tied to one office, one local server room or one route into its systems.

Build for access and resilience

The design combined cloud services with a rented, colocated redundant platform. Remote Desktop Services provided managed desktops that staff could reach from anywhere, while the colocated infrastructure supplied the resilient service foundation behind them.

That created a clear operating boundary: the working environment lived on infrastructure designed to be available, controlled and supported centrally. The user’s location was no longer part of the dependency chain.

The outcome

When Covid arrived, Corporate Options already had the working model it needed. The company did not have to invent remote operations in the middle of the disruption because its services and desktops were already built to be reached away from the office.

The value was foresight made practical: recognising where the operating model was heading, making the infrastructure change early and leaving the business able to continue when that future arrived abruptly.

If important services still depend on one place or one ageing platform, the fractional IT leadership offer turns that exposure into a practical transition plan.
